Also included is the original wood box. All of the cutters except for the tongue or match cutter are marked with their nominal widths, which are 5/16″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″, 13/16″, 1-1/4″ and 1-1/2. The gap on the tongue cutter is about 1/4 in width. The box is not marked. Condition of the cutters is very good, reasonably clean and bright with some scattered bits of patina or light rust, and a few tiny spots of faint pitting. Condition of the box is good, other than the large chip at the upper edge of the main part of the box. It shows wear along the sharp corners and where the little nails are that hold it together. Both clips for the lid are intact and original. This is not a complete set of all the cutters made for the 46, but these are nicer thanmany, ans this set includes the hard to find 13/16! For a Stanley Number 45 or 55 wood plane as pictured. Cutting widths are 3/16″ to 1/2″ by 16ths, plus 5/8″ and 3/4″. Overall width of each cutter is about 1/8 wider than the cutting or profile width. The 6 smaller cutters are not marked, and the two larger cutters are marked “28” and “29”. These all have the Stanley notch in the upper corner to engage the adjuster, and all are original Stanley cutters. These will not interchange with Sargent planes, as Sargent cutters used different notches. Overall lengths of the cutters are all between 3-9/16″ and a hair over 3-5/8″. The 3/16″ to 1/2″ cutters would have been standard cutters for the Stanley 45 plane. All of the cutters would have been standard cutters for an early Stanley 55 plane, but the the 3/4 cutter (#29) was deleted on later 55 planes, and is more scarce than the other widths. Condition of all 8 is good to very good. They all have some patina (color) and light rust, with the rust mostly out at the tips or in the profile area. The 3/16 has been resharpened, while the others all appear to still be the factory grind. I don’t have the 1/8 cutter, which would make the full set for the early 55 planes. Note that Sargent planes used a different adjuster and different notches than a Stanley 45 or 55. These will not operate properly in a Stanley 45 or 55. Included are, from left to right. 9 bead or beading cutters. Sizes (cutting widths) are 1/8″ to 1/2″ by 16ths, plus 5/8″ and 3/4″. 11 dado or plow cutters. Sizes are 3/16″ to 1/2″ by 16ths, plus 5/8″, 3/4″, and 7/8. 1 sash cutter with its depth stop. And 2 match or groove cutters. Sizes are 3/16″ and 1/4″. Both have their depth stops. Overall lengths of all the cutters is between about 3-11/16″ and 3-3/4″. Condition is good to very good, other than they all have varying amouts of light rust, and a few have some small bits of pitting. One of the cutters is not original, so please keep reading. These are skewed cutters for a Stanley 46, and won’t make much sense if you try to install them in a 45 or 55. 8 dado or plow cutters. Each is marked with its width, which are 1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″, 13/16″, 7/8, and. 1 match or groove cutter that is not marked. 1 sash cutter that is not marked. Notice the little notch at the upper end, this started out life as a Stanley 45 or 55 cutter, and someone cleverly modified it to be used in a 46. And the cutter box which is unmarked. It appears to be an original Stanley box, but I suspect it started out life as a 45 or more likely 55 cutter box. It measures about 10-3/16″ by 4-7/16″. The 46 was offered with a maximum total of 12 cutters if you count the slitter. The 13/16 is the least common as it was offered for a shorter time compared to all of the other cutters. With the 9 original cutters that are included here, you would need a 3/16 cutter, a filletster cutter, and a slitter to make a complete set. Condition of the cutters is generally good to very good, depending on the cutter. Five have some light patina (color) and rust, which are the 3 smallest and the filletster and the sash cutters. All of these came to me together except for the 1/2 which I added to the set. It has a rather grayish appearance, but no rust or pitting. The other four are reasonably bright and shiny with just a little bit of patina. Condition of the box is good but dirty, again with no label. One set of 54 cutters for a Stanley 55 wood plane as pictured. Also included are the 4 cutter boxes and 4 lids, although they have some condition issues. Earlier 55 planes came with 52 cutters, and later 55 planes came with 55 cutters, with 4 added and 1 deleted to get to 55. This is the later set, but I’m missing the # 18-1/2 cutter which is a 13/16 dado and one of the four added cutters. The other three cutters that were added to get from 52 to 55 are the #40 and #41 chamfer cutters, and the #6 3/16 match cutter, and those three cutters are included. The #29 beading cutter was deleted when Stanley went from 52 to 55, and it is not included with this set. They are photographed in box order (Cutter Box 1, Cutter Box 2, etc) in the pictures of the cutters. The slitter was counted by Stanley as one of the cutters in the set, and although it didn’t fit in the box it is shown on Box 3. This came to me as 40 cutters with Boxes 1, 3, and 4. They have the proper labels for the later 55 cutter set. I added in Box 2 which doesn’t have any label at all, and added in 14 cutters to fill that box except for the # 18-1/2 as noted. Condition of the cutters is very good. I didn’t do any cleaning, this is exactly how they came to me, and some would look even better with a light cleaning. The cutters in Box 2, which are the ones I added in, have the most variation in condition, but I tried to pick nice cutters for that box. The sash cutter does not have a depth stop, but both match cutters have their depth stops. Condition of the boxes is fair on average. They are original boxes and lids. Box 1 — the wood is split out and missing on one end of the lid, so there is nothing for the latch to attach to on one side of that end. The label is dark and dirty with some scratches or bits missing, especially about where cutters 113 and 115 are pictured. Both lid latches are present. Box 2 — this is the added box, with no label. Both lid latches are present but rusty. Box 3 — the label is dark and dirty with some missing pieces especially around the edges. Box 4 — only one lid latch is present, the other lid latch is mostly broken off and missing. The label is a bit cleaner than the other two but has some missing pieces especially at both ends.
