I f your wondering why your getting chatter and poor surface finish with your standard fly cutter you have to look at its construction. Most adjustable fly cutters use a 1/2 tool bit that was designed to be used on a lathe or in a boring bar. Hang that 1/2 tool bit out a little to get a larger width of cut and you create chatter, it’s not rigid enough. There are other obvious factors that can cause a poor finish such as sloppy spindle bearings in the machine, an out of tram head, or sloppy ways and or gibs. Another issue is with how the cutter is attached to the machine. A big cylindrical disk is very rigid but the 1/2″ or 3/4″ or even 1 shaft is not and the stiffness or rigidity of the tool just makes the shaft flex more creating chatter and poor finish. Collet type holders should never be used with a fly cutter and most end mill holders are too long and create too much leverage because they hang down too far. For best results the cutting edge of a fly cutter should be as close to the machines spindle as possible. Brand new fly cutter body and 3 bar set. Comes with one 5″, one 7.5″, and one 11 long bar.
