Two of the irons have been modified, so please keep reading. The six smaller plow or dado irons are marked with their sizes — 3/16″, 5/16″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″, and 7/8″. The two largest irons are unmarked. One is a plough or dado iron that measures about 1-1/8″, and the other is a 1/4″ tongue iron. Length of each iron measured along one edge varies from about 2-15/16″ to 3-1/16″. The modification shown in the 7th and 8th pictures is to the 7/8″ iron, although it is still wider than 13/16″. The 1-1/8″ iron must have started out as a 1-1/4″ plough or 1-1/2 filletster iron, but you can’t tell that it has been modified by just looking at the edges, you have to measure it. Condition is otherwise generally good to very good, with some patina (color), some spots of very light rust, and a few spots of pitting. Some have seen some light flattening. A full set would have 10 to 12 irons. Missing are the 1/4″ plough, either the 1-1/4″ or 1-1/2″ iron, and in later sets, a slitter and a 13/16″ plough iron. The winner gets all 8 irons. One of the cutters is not original, so please keep reading. These are skewed cutters for a Stanley 46, and won’t make much sense if you try to install them in a 45 or 55. 8 dado or plow cutters. Each is marked with its width, which are 1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″, 13/16″, 7/8, and. 1 match or groove cutter that is not marked. 1 sash cutter that is not marked. Notice the little notch at the upper end, this started out life as a Stanley 45 or 55 cutter, and someone cleverly modified it to be used in a 46. And the cutter box which is unmarked. It appears to be an original Stanley box, but I suspect it started out life as a 45 or more likely 55 cutter box. It measures about 10-3/16″ by 4-7/16″. The 46 was offered with a maximum total of 12 cutters if you count the slitter. The 13/16 is the least common as it was offered for a shorter time compared to all of the other cutters. With the 9 original cutters that are included here, you would need a 3/16 cutter, a filletster cutter, and a slitter to make a complete set. Condition of the cutters is generally good to very good, depending on the cutter. Five have some light patina (color) and rust, which are the 3 smallest and the filletster and the sash cutters. All of these came to me together except for the 1/2 which I added to the set. It has a rather grayish appearance, but no rust or pitting. The other four are reasonably bright and shiny with just a little bit of patina. Condition of the box is good but dirty, again with no label. Antique STANLEY No 46 Skew Cutter Combination Dado Plane SUPERB COMPLETE SET. Other tools of similar caliber seem to be owned by private tool collector web sites. This is a once in a lifetime find, it has sat forgotten in a wood toolbox in my great grandfather’s cluttered workroom for nearly 100 years untouched and waiting for its day in the sun! This beauty is in EXCELLENT condition and ready for use in the shop or to put on display in an antique tool collection. I think it is made from rosewood and nickel plated iron. Lightly used (if it was ever used at all). It comes with both long and short rods, and all twelve cutters, and the original box, and other small parts. As far as I can tell the nickel coating is intact, but you can judge for yourself in the many photos. The blades are very sharp, they may have never even been used. The main body almost looks like it could have been bought at a hardware store yesterday although it is about 100 years old. I would estimate the body to be considered Good+ to near Fine condition making t. His is the perfect piece for a collector or artisan. Writing on the box reads: STANLEY – One Adjustable Nickel Plated DADO, PLOW and FILLETSTER PLANE – (Skew Cutters) – 46 – Reg. STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO.
