This is the ideal tool for luthiers and woodworkers that doing inlay work. The circle cutter is made from steel, stainless steel, wood and brass. More particular the body of the tool is made from Swedish steel (Uddeholm – Impax Supreme). Impax Supreme is a pre hardened (310 HB/33 HRc) Cr-Ni-Mo alloy steel, which offers wear resistance for long service life. The handle of the tool is made from African Rosewood. And was treated with Tung oil. The tool comes with two stainless steel arms and an interchangeable blade holder. The cutting range of the tool is 46mm to 253mm with the short arm and 246mm to 452mm with the long one. The body of the circle cutter has an extra feature. Just behind the knurled thumb screw there is a plastic set screw; by adjusting this screw you can control the friction applied on the arm. The tool comes in a wooden box with 5 blades (3 for clockwise and 2 for anticlockwise cutting), a screwdriver, 3 Allen wrenches, a small bottle for oil, 2 pads from plastic and brass, spare screws and with a second-slightly thinner-wooden handle made from Amboyna burl. The box is made from solid Oak wood, Wenge and plywood. The top of the lid is dressed with leather. The inside and base of the box is dressed with velvet paper. Before using the tool it will be wise to lubricate the arm with a couple of drops of oil, this will enhance the movement and minimize the friction. The knurled thumb screw locks the arm effectively; in conjunction with the friction adjusting screw the applied force from your fingers would be minimal. The cutting blades are hardened in length approximately 13-15mm from the tip, their hardness is within 57-59HRc. The angle of the blades is at 45 degrees and the bevel is ground to 20 degrees; for better results you can polish the bevel on a honing stone. The blade holder accepts blades with thickness from 0.5 to 2.0mm and width up to 6.0mm. This gives you the advantage of using blades of different thicknesses made by you or perhaps the blades from your old circle cutter. However, for blades that are thinner than 1.0mm you may need to change the set screw on the thumb screw of the blade holder (this can be done simply by using the 2.5mm Allen wrench supplied with set). If you’d like to use the tool for inlay work (on wood or veneer) the supplied pads will guide the tool perfectly. You may also find them useful in case you need to cut circles on thick leather. Remember that the body of the tool is steel; although it’s pre-hardened it can get oxidized, so when is not in use apply a thin coat of lubricant.
